Establishment and Identity

EASTLEIGHWOOD was Formed on 1th July, 2011, by a Group of Somali Youth in Nairobi’s Eastleigh Area, Kenya. Eastleigh is an Autonomous and Fastest Growing Commercial Hub in Nairobi. It is situated in the Eastland’s part of Nairobi is considered to be one of the most Populous and Biggest business Regions in Kenya with over a Million people of different origins Trading weekly. Eastleigh, as Regional observers argue is a ‘City within a City”. Being an Estate Predominantly Occupied by the Somali Communities, Eastleigh is also Said to be Somalia’s Unofficial Capital, in other words the ‘Little Mogadishu’. Youths in Eastleigh & its Environment are Exposed to Urban Problems and Challenges that’s negatively Affecting the Somali Communities ( Most of whom are Vulnerably Marginalized Groups and Refugees-an at-risk populations ), thus Due to idleness, the Somali Refugee Youth feel Frustrated and dissatisfied with their Lives and serve as Easy Targets for Recruitment by Violent extremist Groups.

Eastleighwood was therefore formed by the Youth themselves to Empower the Community through Youth-Lead initiatives aimed to Offer Solutions to Challenges on Sensitive Issues by the Use of Arts, Media, Social Network Platforms/ONLINE and Interactive Forums. By Nature-Partnerships with all Stakeholders, Governments and the International Community, Eastleighwood is Strongly Committed to Support and Empower the Somali Youth Worldwide ( Who are Vulnerable, AT-RISK and Potential), by Encouraging them to Offer Solutions Some of the Sensitive Issues facing Them.

The General View on Our LOGO Identity also Portrays the Use of the online Social Media Network/Platforms as Modern-Day Community Engagements tools, Such as Includes Facebook, Google(+)plus, Twitter, Youtube, Linkedlin, Skype, My space, among Others.

Eastleighwood Recognizes that its Target Group/Community who are mainly the Global Somali speaking Populations are an Oral Community (in Other Words, a Community where Verbal Communication-Word of Mouth, Social Gatherings/Networks, Films/Arts, Poetry, and Electronic Media; Radio & TV, are the Most Effective Medium to Reach this Community as Opposed to Written Communications. Research have Proved this Phenomenon Right, and is also Evidence the Wide-spread ‘Informal Gathering’-called ‘Fadhi-Ku-dirir’in Somali Language. It’s an Informal, Political & Social Gatherings that’s Very Common in even in the Present-Day Modern Somalis!

At Times Fadhi-Ku-dirir goes More Politically Futile but Passionate Attack and Counter-attack with Missiles weaponized with Tribal venomous Warheads (mutual caustic Blames and Insults) on each Other or on each Other’s Clan for causing the Nation’s crisis or Express Pros and Cons views about Diverse International actors’ Involvement in Somalia – a Feverish chatter that unabatedly goes on daily in Tea-shops, Restaurants, Streets, and all Gathering places inside and outside the country for nothing else but just to Stimulate and Satisfy their Criticism and Gossip addicted inner Psychological Impulses!

It’s On the View of their Verbal Nature ( An Oral Community) that Eastleighwood as a Youth-Forum and Community-Centered Organization is Trying to Pass Important Information/Messages and Awareness Campaigns/Sensitizations that advocate for Peace, Unity, Stability & Development in the Community, by the Use of Arts, Media, Social Network Platforms/ONLINE and Interactive Forums/Programs/Workshop.

As a Youth-Centered Organization, Eastleighwood is also Committed to Nurturing Talents/Skills amongst the Vulnerable ( , and Potential) Somali Youths; Thus Enabling them to Build Moderation, Prosper and Positively Contribute to the Community and to the Society in General, by Shunning Violence, Reject Extreme Terrorism(Fundamental Ideologists), and , Foster Identity & Self-Confidence in Themselves.

EASTLEIGHWOOD’s Values is also more heightened to Advocate for the Basic Fundamental Rights and Privileges to the Less Fortunate Members of Our Societies Such as Persons with Disabilities, Rights of Children, Women, Elderly, Street Families, Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, the Poor, the Sick, as well as the Rights of the Already Politically, Socially and Economically Marginalized and Minority Groups.
